I am not certain how other writers develop a series with a continuing set of characters. In my case, it was a matter of accident and chance. It never occurred to me to write a series featuring a private eye working in Bangkok. But then, a lot of things don’t occur to me at the time I am doing something.

In the beginning of the universe there was a singularity. A point so small it makes a pinprick larger than the size of the sun. From that came the Big Bang and everything in the universe expanded at super velocity. That’s not much different from the creation of the Vincent Calvino novels.

In 1990 a close friend, Ronald Lieberman, was sitting on a beach in the south of Thailand, and he turned and said, “Why not write a novel about a private eye in Thailand?”

Bang.
